Targeting & Audiences
Reach the right respondents by configuring demographic filters, screener questions, and sample sizes.
Why Targeting Matters
A survey is only as good as its respondents. Targeting lets you focus your budget on the people whose opinions matter most for your research. Instead of collecting 1,000 random responses, you can collect 200 highly relevant ones from your exact audience.
Demographic Filters
During the Audience stage of the survey wizard, you can filter respondents by:
- Age range - Set minimum and maximum age (e.g., 18-35 for a youth-focused study).
- Gender - Target specific genders or leave open for all.
- Location - Filter by country, region, state, or LGA (Local Government Area). Currently supports all 36 Nigerian states plus FCT with full LGA coverage.
- Education level - From primary school to postgraduate.
- Employment status - Employed, self-employed, student, unemployed, retired, etc.
- Income range - Target specific income brackets relevant to your product or research.
- Ethnicity - Target specific ethnic groups.
- Religion - Filter by religious affiliation.
- Marital status - Single, married, divorced, etc.
- Has children - Filter by parental status.
- Household size - Set minimum and maximum household members.
- Area type - Urban, semi-urban, or rural.
You can combine multiple filters. For example, "Women aged 25-40 in Lagos with a university degree" is a perfectly valid target audience.
Targeting Specific People (VIP Expert Respondents)
Sometimes you don't want a demographic - you want those exact people: a panel of doctors, the power users of your product, or a specific consultant whose opinion you're effectively paying for. For that, the Basics stage offers a second audience mode: Target specific respondents.
In this mode you skip demographic filters and screeners entirely. Instead:
- You pick people by name. Search by username or display name. Only users who switched on their Expert Profile (in their settings) and verified their identity appear in the search, so everyone you can pick is a real, verified person.
- You pay each person their own rate. Every expert can set a minimum rate on their profile, and the offer field is pre-filled with it - you can raise an offer, never lower it below their minimum. Your total is simply the sum of the offers you made, plus the platform fee.
- Only invited people can see or take the survey. It never appears in public listings, and each invitee is notified personally with their own offer, with gentle reminders if they haven't responded after a few days.
- The list stays editable while the survey runs. You can invite more people to a live survey (each new invitation is paid for the moment you send it), and remove anyone who hasn't responded yet - their slot is refunded to your wallet instantly and they're notified that the invitation was withdrawn. Untaken invitations are also refunded automatically when the survey closes.
- Results are not anonymous. Because you handpicked and paid each respondent individually, exports of a targeted survey include each respondent's name and username. Experts are told this before they enable their profile.
Targeted surveys work for both question-based surveys and Live Sessions. For a live-session survey, the session incentive is one uniform amount that must meet or exceed every picked expert's hourly minimum for your chosen session length - the wizard tells you exactly whose minimum is the binding one.
If an expert has shared their personal link (opinyze.com/e/username), opening it starts a survey with them already added.
Prerequisite Targeting (Past Surveys & Polls)
Beyond who someone is, you can target by what they've already done on Opinyze. During the Prerequisites stage of the wizard, you can restrict your survey to people who:
- Completed a specific past survey - perfect for follow-up studies, longitudinal research, or drilling deeper with the exact respondents from an earlier round.
- Voted in a specific poll - and optionally only people who picked particular options, so you can reach an audience by how they voted, not just that they voted.
Add as many requirements as you need, then choose how they combine:
- ALL requirements (AND) - respondents must satisfy every requirement.
- ANY requirement (OR) - satisfying one requirement is enough.
A few things to know:
- Prerequisites apply to paid surveys with a funded budget.
- The wizard shows how many people will be eligible once the prerequisites are applied, so you can see the audience impact before publishing.
- People who don't meet the requirements yet aren't shut out forever: the moment someone completes the required survey or poll, your survey unlocks for them and they're notified.
- Polls can carry prerequisites too, so you can chain participation across surveys and polls in either direction.
Screener Questions
For even more precise targeting, add screener questions during the Screener stage of the wizard. These are short qualifying questions (single choice or multiple choice) that determine whether a respondent fits your criteria before they enter the main survey. Examples:
- "Do you own a smartphone?" (Yes/No)
- "Have you purchased groceries online in the last 30 days?"
- "Which of these products have you used?"
Screener questions support three marking strategies:
- At Least One - Respondent must select at least one of the correct options.
- No Wrong - Respondent must not select any incorrect options.
- Exact Match - Respondent must select the exact set of correct options.
Respondents who don't meet the screener criteria are politely redirected. Whether they receive a small consolation credit depends on how you configured the Rewards stage - consolation is optional and set by you as the survey creator.
Sample Size Planning
The wizard helps you plan your sample size based on your budget and reward per response. A few guidelines:
- 50-100 responses work well for quick pulse checks and internal feedback.
- 200-500 responses give solid statistical reliability for most market research.
- 500+ responses are ideal when you need to break results down by multiple demographic segments.
The platform shows an estimated collection time based on your targeting criteria and the available respondent pool.
Broader targeting fills faster and costs less per response. Only add filters that are genuinely important to your research goals.
